Chippa United assistant coach addresses the future of Nigeria's 2023 Afcon star Nwabali
Published: August 20, 2024Chippa United assistant coach Thambo September has revealed that Stanley Nwabali is not forcing a move and is not opposed to staying at the club amid links with Queens Park Rangers, Al-Ettifaq, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper's stock has been on the rise since his magnificent performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept four clean sheets to help Nigeria advance to the final.
He has been linked with English Championship side QPR who have already snapped up Belgian shot-stopper Paul Nardi this summer, thereby making a move to the Loftus Road highly skeptical.
Similarly, Al-Ettifaq have signed another goalkeeper in Marek Rodák from Fulham on a free transfer which will make a move to the Saudi Pro League side difficult at the moment.
Kaizer Chiefs may have also moved on from their pursuit of the Nigeria international because of the arrival of Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy while Orlando Pirates have added Bayanda Thabethe to their goalkeeping ranks.
Due to the clubs linked with him signing other shot-stoppers, Nwabali is still stuck at Chippa United and the club's assistant has disclosed that the 2023 Afcon star is calm about the situation and could stay with the Saudi Pro-League side.
"We all want Stanley to go to the next level, forward to the bigger things," Thambo September told FARpost
"That's why he plays so good, so that he can get a bigger move. From the management, the chairman, and us as coaches and players, we want that to happen.
"But at the moment, he's here with us, and he's a professional. He's working for that moment, and when that moment happens...He's being a professional and training well, and if that doesn't happen, he's looking forward to playing in the PSL for Chippa United.
"But me as a coach I don't know if there's anything on the table. I'm not going to be like everyone else; that's gonna be like there's something here and there.
"On my side, I don't know anything that's on the table. But all I want is good things for him, I want the best for Stanley because he deserves it, he has done well."
The 28-year-old has made three appearances for Chippa United this term, keeping one clean sheet and conceding four goals.
