Celtic loanee Oluwayemi explains why he joined Dunfermline Athletic at this stage of his career
Published: August 25, 2024
Celtic-owned goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi, younger brother of 2021 Super Eagles invitee Josh Oluwayemi, has explained his decision to join Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic.
After weeks of negotiations between the Hoops and Pars, the England youth international of Nigerian descent finally completed a season-long loan move to the KDM Group East End Park outfit three days ago.
The deal was completed in time for him to be available to face Hamilton Academical FC but the promising glovesman was an unused substitute at ZLX Stadium on Saturday, August 24.
Oluwayemi has departed Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in search of first team opportunities, with the signings of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo, pushing the Anglo-Nigerian further down the pecking order of goalkeepers as he's also behind Scott Bain.
When asked whether he believed Dunfermline Athletic was the right place of him at this stage of his career, Tobi told the club's media: "I think what Dunfermline Athletic has to offer and the support from the fans, and how big the club is and what the games mean, that's the same passion that I feel like I need going into games and then my football so I feel like it was a great fit for me."
The 21-year-old has had a couple of loan spells previously, at Cork City (Ireland) and Admira Wacker (Austria), but injuries limited his appearances to eleven combined for both clubs.
On what he took away from his previous loan spells, he said: "Ireland was my first loan. The intensity you get from first team football and what it means to the people surrounded by the club and how you need to take that into your stride and still perform.
"Although I was injured, I still learned from the mistakes I made, the things I did well.
"Going into Austria which was a totally different experience for me, different culture, different language, that maturity to go and deal with all those and still perform is also important because as a footballer no matter what's going on you're still expected to perform, and those are things that you learn as you go into different places and different experiences."
Oluwayemi is not lacking fitness ahead of a potential debut for Dunfermline Athletic, given that he trained with Celtic's first team during pre-season preparations.
