Official: Watford and Super Eagles forward mutually agree to terminate contract
Published: August 31, 2024With a statement on their official website, Championship club Watford have confirmed the departure of Super Eagles forward Samuel Kalu following the mutual termination of his contract.
Signed by the Hornets from Bordeaux in January 2022, Kalu struggled for game time during his stint at Vicarage Road and was farmed out on loan to Swiss Super League club Lausanne-Sport for the entirety of the 2023-2024 campaign.
His playing opportunities were limited due to constant injuries and loss of form.
Kalu featured in thirteen games in all competitions, with four of them in the Premier League, but he did not manage to register any goal contributions.
During his loan spell at Lausanne-Sport, the winger had five goal involvements over twenty-one all-competition appearances.
The Golden Boot Soccer Academy product, a member of Nigeria's squad to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, has played in sixteen games for the Super Eagles but has not been called up since making a cameo in a 2022 World Cup qualifying match with Central African Republic in October 2021.
On his football CV, Kalu also counts AS Trencin and KAA Gent as his previous clubs.
The 27-year-old can join a new club even after the close of the summer transfer window, given that his contract was terminated on August 30.
