Jonathan Spiff Asuzu: Nigeria to battle world champions Argentina for River Plate's prolific striker

Nigeria and world champions Argentina are set to battle it out for the services of prolific River Plate center forward Jonathan Spiff Asuzu, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

The 17-year-old Asuzu has caught the eye this season due to his impressive goalscoring record for River Plate's youth team, with 16 goals from eighteen appearances before the international break.

Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Asuzu is uncapped at international level, and qualifies to play for his country of birth Argentina as well as Nigeria's national teams through his Nigerian father Godwin Asuzu.

Godwin, a River Plate fan, moved from Nigeria to Argentina twenty years ago in search of work and is married to an Argentinian, Maria, according to the official website of River Plate.

Described as an intelligent forward who can read the game, Jonathan Spiff Asuzu is also known for his remarkable speed and an excellent ability to finish with both feet.

While Asuzu Senior was a fan of Ariel Ortega who faced Nigeria at the 1996 Olympic Games and 2002 World Cup, his son idolizes River Plate academy graduate and Manchester City alum Julián Álvarez.

After impressing in a trial, Jonathan joined River Plate's academy at the age of seven and progressed through the youth ranks until he was promoted to the Juveniles.

Jonathan is the top scorer in the sixth division of Argentina's football league and he's confident of breaking into the first team sooner rather than later.
