'Man-on-man that will be difficult' - Antwerp coach plans double team to silence Arokodare
Published: April 22, 2025
Antwerp head coach Andries Ulderink has revealed plans to deploy a double-marking strategy in a bid to contain Genk’s red-hot striker Tolu Arokodare ahead of their crucial Belgian Pro League clash.
The towering Nigerian forward has emerged as one of the most prolific attackers in the league this season, prompting Ulderink to admit that a man-to-man approach would be insufficient.
"We will certainly have to position ourselves better than against Union,” Ulderink said during his pre-match press conference, according to Nieuwsblad.
"That has been discussed. We can best stop Tolu in a collaboration between Denis Odoi and Zeno [Van den Bosch], because man-on-man that will be difficult."
Arokodare has been in blistering form for Genk, registering 21 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.
His consistency in front of goal has made him the top scorer in the Belgian League, and his physical presence, aerial dominance, and ability to create chances make him a constant menace for defenders.
The 24-year-old's stellar form has not gone unnoticed. His exploits recently earned him his first international call-up by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who handed him a debut in Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
His introduction to the national team marks a significant milestone in what has already been a breakthrough season for the striker.
Arokodare’s performances have also caught the attention of top European clubs, with several teams in the Premier League reportedly monitoring his progress.
His combination of strength, finishing, and tactical intelligence is seen as a rare blend, making him a potential transfer target when the summer window opens.
As Antwerp prepare to host Genk, all eyes will be on whether the defensive pairing of Odoi and Van den Bosch can effectively shut down Arokodare.
The Reds understand that nullifying Genk’s most lethal weapon will be key to securing a result in a match that could have implications in the race for European qualification.
