Motherwell coach gets 6-game ban for comments on Dessers goal in Rangers win v St Johnstone
Published: September 14, 2024According to The Scottish Sun, Motherwell coach Richard Foster has been given a six-game ban for the comments he made on Cyriel Dessers’ goal during Rangers’ 2-0 win over St.Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup last month.
Dessers opened the scoring for the Light Blues in the 61st minute, having been assisted by Rabbi Matondo but the goal had to undergo a video assistant referee check before it was allowed to stand.
The Nigerian striker also had a hard in the second goal, setting up Ross McCausland in stoppage time to seal the victory for Rangers.
Dessers’ goal was the subject of controversy after the game after St.Johnstone manager Craig Levein claimed that referee Matthew MacDermid had awarded a free-kick before the Nigerian striker scored.
The reason behind MacDermid allowing the strike to stand was revealed after the broadcaster read an explanation from the Scottish FA for doing so.
Commenting on the reason for the goal being allowed, Foster who was working on BBC Scotland radio show Sportsound said
“Lies! It’s a lie."Unless he puts the whistle to his mouth for no reason.”
He has since apologized for the comment, but that didn't prevent the FA from charging him, and a verdict has now been given by the Scottish football governing body.
The Scottish tactician will now serve an immediate four-game ban with another two matches suspended should he breach the same disciplinary rule again.
Dessers was unable to add to his goal tally as Rangers lost to Celtic in the Old Firm derby before the international break but will have the chance to do so in the Scottish Premiership fixture with Dundee United tomorrow.
