What Augsburg coach said about Brentford loanee Onyeka after Bundesliga debut
Published: September 16, 2024FC Augsburg manager Jess Thorup has commended Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka following a stellar debut in the Bundesliga.
Onyeka, who joined Augsburg on loan from Brentford over the summer, played a crucial role in the team’s 3-1 win against FC St. Pauli at the WWK Arena.
Making his debut on Sunday, the 26-year-old midfielder made an immediate impact by providing an assist for Augsburg's second goal. Onyeka delivered a precise cross that was expertly finished by Phillip Tietz.
Despite having only trained with his new team twice, Onyeka demonstrated impressive strength, physicality, and composure.
Thorup, speaking to Kicker, lauded Onyeka’s performance and adaptability.
"He only trained twice and was involved in the international matches," Thorup noted. "From the start, he showed us what a good player he is. He is ready to help the team, and that's what he did today."
Thorup described Onyeka’s debut as outstanding, though he mentioned that a goal was the only element missing from an otherwise exemplary performance.
"Maybe the only thing missing was the goal at the end, although he had an assist and played very well," Thorup said. "For a first game, it was really an outstanding game."
Onyeka’s impressive start is expected to solidify his place in the Augsburg squad and further advance his career in German football.
