'Got some Charlton blood in him' - Bafana Bafana and Addicks legend Shaun Bartlett on Lookman's trajectory
Published: September 20, 2024Bafana Bafana and Charlton Athletic legend Shaun Bartlett is pleased with Ademola Lookman's remarkable progress and has highlighted that the Atalanta forward carries some Addicks DNA.
Bartlett featured in 139 matches for the Addicks in all competitions, netting 26 goals, one of which earned him the Premier League's Goal of the Season award in 2000-2001.
The retired South Africa international is pleased with the development of Lookman, who was playing in the third tier of English football seven years ago before earning himself a big move to Premier League team Everton in January 2017.
Lookman joined Charlton Athletic from Waterloo at the age of 16 after catching the eye in a friendly between the Addicks U16s and London FA.
During his time at Charlton, he totaled 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring twelve goals, and won the LFE Apprentice of the Year for the Championship at the 2016 Football League Awards.
Charlton have been keeping tabs on the progress of their academy graduate after his departure from the Valley and sent him congratulatory messages after his sensational hat-trick in the Europa League final and nomination for the 2024 Ballon d'Or.
Speaking on the Addicks Young Player of the Year for 2015-2016, Shaun Bartlett, who was on punditry duties for SuperSport, said after the Atalanta v Arsenal Champions League encounter on Thursday night: "He's got some Charlton blood in him, joined at the age of sixteen, scored a couple of goals and then he was sold to Everton for £10 million.
"Obviously from there his career just elevated quite quickly."
Shaun Bartlett and another 1996 AFCON winner Mark Fish will be back at the Valley on Sunday, October 5 to watch the League One clash between Charlton and Birmingham City.
