Update on international future of Chelsea star Tosin ahead of Super Eagles squad announcement
Published: September 25, 2024In the coming days, Nigeria's interim coach Augustine Eguavoen is expected to unveil his squad list for the Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya in October.
Ahead of the squad announcement, speculation is rife in the local media that Chelsea central defender Tosin Adarabioyo has committed his international future to Nigeria over his country of birth England.
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that reports in the local media suggesting that the Manchester City academy product is keen to play for the Super Eagles are misleading as he has not been yet been contacted to clear the air on his international future.
Eguavoen has not yet reached out to Tosin ahead of the unveiling of his squad, meaning it is unlikely that the Premier League star will be included in the squad list to face Libya.
The Nigeria coaches and scouts are scouring Europe for a reliable central defender to beef up their defensive options and Tosin fits the bill, given that he's playing at the highest level for one of the big clubs in Europe.
With a combined age of 61, Nigeria's preferred centre-back duo of William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi are are not getting any younger in football terms, and despite their wealth of experience, their lack of pace could be exploited by opponents.
If invited, Tosin will not have problems adapting to the Super Eagles team, given that he has played together with four members of Nigeria's ideal starting lineup in the past, namely Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Ademola Lookman.
London-born Tosin has not figured for England's national teams for close to nine years, with his last appearance for the Young Lions coming against Japan youth team on November 15, 2015.
