'A nightmare for Mourinho' - Osimhen hailed in Italy after impressive display against Fenerbahce
Published: September 25, 2024The Italian press has reacted to Victor Osimhen's performance during Saturday's Intercontinental Derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe SK at Ülker Stadyumu FB Şükrü Saraçoğlu Spor Kompleksi.
Following his loan switch from Napoli to Galatasaray, the reigning African Footballer of the Year became the highest-profile signing by any Turkish club in the summer transfer window.
The marquee Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho is now managing Galatasaray's Istanbul rivals, Fenerbahce after his acrimonious departure from Serie A outfit AS Roma, which has raised the profile of the Turkish Super Lig.
The Nigeria international impressed as the Lion secured a 3-1 away victory against their Istanbul rivals.
Osimhen played a key role in Galatasaray's second goal, chesting the ball down for Dries Mertens to slot past goalkeeper Livakovic in the 28th minute, marking the first time he's recorded assists in consecutive games since September 2019.
The Italian media have blasted Mourinho for playing defensively at home even when the Yellow Canaries were two goals down and suggested that the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur coach was scared to leave spaces in behind for Osimhen to exploit.
"Osimhen was a nightmare for Mourinho and all of Fenerbahce on Sunday. The coach was afraid of Osimhen and despite finishing the first half 0-2 behind, he always played very reserved, waiting and not giving Osi space, even in the second half in front of his 50,000 fans," Fanatik wrote, citing the Italian press.
Galatasaray and Fenerbahce meet again in the Super Lig at RAMS Park on February 23, 2025.
