Victor Boniface reveals transfer secret about Osimhen, picks himself over Lookman as next African POTY
Published: September 27, 2024Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has tipped himself to win the African Player of the Year award ahead of Ademola Lookman.
The Bayern Leverkusen forward also shared insights on Osimhen's ambition to play in the Premier League amid summer transfer speculation linking him to Chelsea.
Boniface had an impressive debut season, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions, helping Leverkusen clinch both the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.
However, he fell short in the UEFA Europa League final, where Ademola Lookman's hat-trick led Atalanta to victory.
Lookman's standout performance and other accomplishments throughout the season earned him a spot on the Ballon d'Or nomination list.
Despite this, Boniface contests the notion that Lookman is the favourite to win the award, asserting that his own contributions should not be overlooked.
"Probably between me and Lookman. I will go for myself as the African Footballer of the Year, I rate myself that high," he told SportyTV.
"If it's just what we did last season, I'll pick myself."
Boniface also addressed Victor Osimhen's transfer situation this summer, revealing the striker's strong desire to play in the Premier League amid links to Chelsea.
"Three different parties - Napoli, Chelsea, Victor Osimhen. Osimhen's mentality is strong. I know he really wants to come to the Premier League," Boniface said.
"I know that for sure because we spoke one time but whatever happened I don't know. He knows I always wish him the best."
He also discussed the speculation surrounding Osimhen's link to Saudi Arabia, sharing his views on the prospect of playing in the Saudi Pro League.
"There's stuff that happened that nobody knows but people just talk on the internet. There are some details that people don't know. Like I said before I'm not thinking of Saudi Arabia."
Boniface has maintained his impressive form for Leverkusen this season, registering 5 goal involvements (4 goals, 1 assist) in six games.
