Victor Olatunji sends message to Eguavoen: Sparta Prague striker scores in back-to-back games
Published: September 28, 2024
Less than a week before the Nigeria Football Federation announces the Super Eagles roster for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya, Sparta Prague striker Victor Olatunji has sent a clear message to interim boss Augustine Eguavoen that he's worthy of a place in the team.
Olatunji, who is uncapped at international level, was hot topic in these parts following his goal against Salzburg on matchday one of the Champions League.
The Sparta Prague number 7 entered into the history books as the first Nigerian player to score and provide an assist on his Champions League debut.
After he was a non-playing substitute against České Budějovice last weekend, Olatunji returned to the starting lineup for the visit of Sigma Olomouc.
It took him less than thirteen minutes to break the deadlock, heading home an inviting cross from Veljko Birmancevic after a long ball from the Sparta goalkeeper over the top.
Three second half goals from Nigerian forward Yunusa Muritala, Jan Fiala and Filip Zorvan saw the visitors go 3-1 up, before Ermal Krasniqi pulled one back in the first minute of stoppage time.
The scoreboard was reading 1-1 when Olatunji was replaced with nineteen minutes left on the clock.
With his strike versus Sigma Olomouc, the 25-year-old took his tally for the season to six goals from fifteen all-competition appearances.
It remains to be seen whether Olatunji will be considered for the Super Eagles' Afcon qualifiers in October.
