'Carried it out brilliantly' - French football expert explains Arteta's role in Okocha flourishing at PSG
Published: October 01, 2024French football expert Matt Spiro has highlighted Mikel Arteta's significant contribution during his time at Paris Saint-Germain alongside Austin Jay-Jay Okocha.
Arteta joined PSG on loan from Barcelona in the 2001-2002 season, while Okocha had been with the club since 1998.
Spiro noted that Arteta's role was crucial in facilitating the creativity of players his teammates allowing them to flourish.
He praised Arteta's qualities during his time at PSG, noting how his tactical awareness and work ethic allowed creative players like Okocha to thrive.
His ability to control the midfield and connect play helped maximize the talents of the more attacking players, creating a dynamic and effective team environment.
"Fernandez asked him to play simply and help provide a platform for more creative talents like Okocha, and he carried it out brilliantly," French football expert Matt Spiro told BBC Sport.
"Arteta was a quiet man but already displayed the steely determination we see in him today. Like most Barcelona players he was technically excellent, but the most surprising and impressive aspect of his game, given his age, was his tactical awareness."
Mikel Arteta will lead Arsenal against his former club PSG in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium.
After a draw against Atalanta in their opening match, the Gunners are aiming for a victory to strengthen their position on the Champions League table.
Mikel Arteta made 53 appearances for PSG before returning to Barcelona and later joining Rangers.
Meanwhile, Jay-Jay Okocha played 113 games for PSG before moving to Bolton in the English Premier League.
