Nigeria still involved in recruitment battle for Omorodion as Porto sensation omitted from Spain squad

The Nigeria Football Federation are still involved in the recruitment battle for Porto young sensation Samuel Omorodion who is in the form of his life at the moment, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

Contrary to speculation about a potential call-up for Spain's October games against Denmark and Serbia, national team boss Luis de la Fuente has omitted Omorodion from the list of twenty five players invited for the two UEFA Nations League matches.

The Granada-reared center forward has made a blistering start to his career at Porto, with an impressive seven goals in six all-competition appearances including braces against Manchester United and Vitória Guimarães SC.

It is known that Nigeria Football Federation's Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen who is the interim coach of the Super Eagles, has close ties with Samuel Omorodion's family, a factor that could play a pivotal role in persuading the striker to to switch his allegiance from Spain to Nigeria.

Samu's father is originally from Edo State, the same state as 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner Eguavoen.

It should be noted that Omorodion is leaning towards representing Spain at senior level as of now, as he feels a stronger connection to the European country than to Nigeria.

The Melilla native became provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth after coming off the bench for the last eighteen minutes of a 2023 European U19 Championship match against Iceland in July 2023.

Rather than being picked for the senior team, Omorodion has been named in Spain's U21 squad and is expected to report for international duty by Monday, October 7 ahead of U21 Euro qualifying matches against Kazakhstan and Malta.

Two forwards of African descent Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams and have been selected in Spain's latest squad.
