1989 Fifa U20 World Cup star Elijah names the best defender in Super Eagles ahead of Afconq
Published: October 09, 2024
Sam Elijah, a key member of the Flying Eagles squad that reached the final of the 1989 Fifa U20 World Cup, has identified William Troost-Ekong as the team's most talented defender ahead of the double-header against Libya.
Nigeria commenced preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against Libya's Mediterranean Knights on Tuesday evening.
Under the guidance of Austin Eguavoen, the team held its first training session on Tuesday evening with twenty players in attendance, including William Troost-Ekong.
Eguavoen invited 23 players for the match, including three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven strikers.
The Super Eagles will play against Libya in Uyo on Friday, October 11, with a return match scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi.
In an interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Elijah expressed optimism about Nigeria's chances.
"Honestly, I am very confident Nigeria will get the three points. We are ready" he stated.
The former Super Eagles defender identified Troost-Ekong as the best defender in the team and also praised his character and leadership abilities.
"For me, I still stick with Troost-Ekong because of his control, power and character."
"The most important thing is for Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup and Nations Cup and the best hand we have right now is Ekong."
Expected to anchor the defense alongside Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, Troost-Ekong's leadership will be vital as Nigeria aims for victory.
The Super Eagles currently top Group D with four points after a win and a goalless draw against Benin and Rwanda, respectively.
A victory against Libya would significantly bolster their qualification hopes for the 2025 AFCON tournament.
