After Musiala and Lukas Nmecha, Germany make move to cap-tie another attack-minded player of Nigerian descent
Published: October 09, 2024Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann has handed a late call-up to Kevin Schade from Premier League club Brentford ahead of his team's upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands.
Schade has been called in as a replacement for Eintracht Frankfurt central defender Robin Koch who has withdrawn from the squad due to a hip injury he suffered during the Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich on Sunday evening.
The 22-year-old forward has played three matches for Germany's senor national team, but remains eligible to represent the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father since all his appearances came in friendly games.
Having represented Germany at U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels, Schade made his senior debut against Peru followed by appearances against Belgium and Japan.
A competitive debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina or the Netherlands in Germany’s October internationals would result in him losing his dual national status.
The Potsdam native has played in nine matches for Brentford in the 2024-2025 season and has registered an assist.
The German Football Association won the recruitment battle for attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and striker Lukas Nmecha, beating England and Nigeria to the services of the Chelsea and Manchester City academy products.
Musiala, widely regarded as Germany's most promising player, has pulled out of the Germany squad due to injury, while Lukas Nmecha has been in the international wilderness since September 23, 2022 when he earned his seventh cap in a UEFA Nations League match with Hungary.
Having switched their allegiances to Nigeria, former Germany youth internationals Jordan Torunarigha and Kevin Akpoguma are no longer eligible to play for their country of birth, while German-born center back Leon Balogun is cap-tied to the three-time African champions.
