River Plate's scoring sensation who idolises Okocha pledges future to Nigeria over Argentina
Published: October 10, 2024Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Jonathan Spiff Asuzu, a highly-rated 17-year-old center forward, has chosen to represent Nigeria internationally over his country of birth, Argentina.
The River Plate youth sensation has been making waves with his impressive goalscoring record, netting 16 times in his first 18 appearances of the season, and has now pledged his allegiance to the Super Eagles.
Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires to a Nigerian father Godwin Asuzu and Argentine mother Maria, the teenage sensation has consistently demonstrated his pace, finishing ability, and potential to become a future star.
The teenager has been with River Plate's academy since the age of seven, steadily progressing through the ranks to earn promotion to the Juveniles.
Affirming his decision to don the famous green and white jersey of the three-time African champions, the young forward stated that it is a dream for him and his family to play for Nigeria, adding that he will never reject a call-up from the national team if it ever came.
Asuzu has cited Nigeria great Austin Okocha, a three-time World Cupper and Africa Cup of Nations winner, as one of his idols.
Asuzu also draws inspiration from River Plate's illustrious academy graduate, Julián Álvarez, who excelled at Manchester City before switching to Atlético de Madrid in the summer transfer window.
His father, Godwin, a River Plate enthusiast, fondly recalls Ariel Ortega's encounters with Nigeria in the 1996 Olympics and 2002 World Cup.
