Dele-Bashiru: What Super Eagles' saviour said after game-winning goal against Libya
Published: October 12, 2024
Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has often been praised for his consistent impressive performances since he broke into the national team a year ago.
The Manchester City academy product was the hero for the three-time African champions on Friday evening, coming off the bench to score the game-winning goal just four minutes from time to save the Super Eagles from an embarrassing draw in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match versus Libya.
Nigeria could have scored more goals but Libya coach Nasser Al-Hadhiri deployed a strategy that limited their chances.
Libya's resolute defence and the outstanding goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi prevented the Super Eagles from breaking the deadlock and the visitors looked to be snatching away a point until Dele-Bashiru struck in the closing minutes.
An early goal would have seen the Mediterranean Knights chasing the game and stopped them employing dark art antics as it would have been to their disadvantage.
This is the second crucial goal that Dele-Bashiru has scored for the Super Eagles within four months, having netted the equalizer on his cap-tying game against South Africa's Bafana Bafana on June 7 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Writing on Instagram, Dele-Bashiru stated: "Solid team performance, Important 3 points, happy to score the winning goal".
The Super Eagles are topping Group D of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with seven points from three games ahead of their trip to Benghazi for the return leg.
