'This was no small accident' - Leverkusen chief reveals Boniface is being assessed before UCL tie v Brest
Published: October 22, 2024Bayer Leverkusen sporting director, Simon Rolfes, has offered insights regarding the status of forward Victor Boniface, who was involved in a serious car accident over the weekend.
This incident occurred shortly after Boniface played a pivotal role in Leverkusen's 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring the winning goal in the second half despite having missed a penalty earlier in the match.
Following the accident, Boniface was spotted at Leverkusen's training facility on Monday morning, although he did not participate in the team's practice ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against Brest.
Rolfes expressed his relief that Boniface emerged from the incident unscathed, emphasizing the importance of safety in such situations.
While Boniface's participation in the match remains uncertain, Rolfes confirmed that the club is open to him potentially playing against Brest.
"He's better. A situation like this isn't easy and there's no doubt that you have to digest it a bit. Of course, we're all very happy that nothing really happened to him," he told Bild.
“We'll talk to him again now and then see what the situation is, whether he'll go or not. That's still open at the moment.”
The Bayer Leverkusen chief stressed the need for caution, considering the nature of the accident.
The Bayer boss said of his reaction to the accident: "First of all, I was relieved that nothing happened to him, his friend and no third party. That is always the most important thing in such cases, that he came out of it safely. But of course, you never want to find yourself in situations like that."
Rolfes continued: "Of course, this was no small accident. That's why we always have to be cautious and evaluate how he is doing every day. Fortunately, it didn't turn out to be serious."
Boniface has enjoyed a strong start to the season, showcasing his value to the squad with seven goals and one assist in ten appearances across all competitions.
