'Unfair competition' - Ex-Fenerbahce winger on having Osimhen and Icardi in the Galatasaray squad
Published: October 22, 2024Retired Turkey international and former Fenerbahce wingback Abdullah Ercan has highlighted that the presence of Victor Osimhen and Mauro Icardi in the same Galatasaray team puts other Turkish Super Lig clubs at a disadvantage.
After failed moves to Chelsea and Al-Ahli on deadline day in the top five European leagues, Osimhen joined the Super Lig champions on loan for the remainder of the season, linking up with Inter Milan legend Icardi.
Both Osimhen and Icardi have been firing on all cylinders, with eight goals and six assists between them this season.
Galatasaray boasts such depth in their attacking lineup that former Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi is struggling to secure a starting spot after his summer transfer from Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce.
With a lethal attack, the Lion have increased their prospects of winning the Super Lig title again, leading the table with 25 points, five points clear of Besiktas in second place.
In an interview with A SPOR, Ercan stated: "Mauro Icardi and Victor Osimhen in Galatasaray are an unfair competition for the Super League".
Osimhen has played down competition with Icardi and Batshuayi, saying he has things to learn from them and they will improve each other's quality.
The 25-year-old made headlines in his last match for Galatasaray with an overhead kick that reached an impressive height of 2.32 meters, falling only 0.06 meters short of the all-time record held by Real Madrid icon Ronaldo.
