Super Eagles stars Lookman, Troost-Ekong named in 10-man shortlist for CAF Men's Player of the Year
Published: October 24, 2024Super Eagles duo William Troost-Ekong and Ademola Lookman have been nominated for the 2024 Confederation of African Football Men's Player of the Year.
The duo will slug it out with Brighton & Hove Albion and Ivory Coast star forward Simon Adingra, Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, Congolese centre-back Chancel Mbemba, and Morocco duo Achraf Hakimi and Soufiane Rahimi.
South Africa shot-stopper Ronwen Williams, Burkina Faso centre-back Edmond Tapsoba, and Algeria's Amine Gouiri complete the 10-man shortlist.
Troost-Ekong won the Greek Super League with PAOK, though he made just 10 appearances as he was either not in the starting lineup or was missing due to injury, and his participation at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations also limited his game time.
His biggest contribution was with Nigeria, as he played a significant role in the West African side, reaching the final of the 2023 AFCON, where they lost to the host nation Ivory Coast.
The veteran centre-back was named in the Team of the Tournament and was the recipient of the Player of the Tournament award, having helped Nigeria keep four clean sheets.
Lookman was also the hero as he helped Atalanta scoop the UEFA Europa League, bagging a hat-trick in the final against an impressive Bayer Leverkusen side.
The 27-year-old was also one of the best players for the Super Eagles at the AFCON, scoring three goals and registering one assist and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Victor Osimhen is the current holder of the award, having helped Napoli scoop Serie A in the 2022/2023 season, breaking a lot of record in the process.
The winner of the award will be announced at a Gala Event in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16.
