Back with a bang: Boniface's goal against Werder Bremen helps Bayer Leverkusen set club record
Published: October 26, 2024
Victor Boniface marked his return from injury with a goal for Bayer Leverkusen during the 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga matchday eight fixture, played at the Weserstadion on Saturday evening.
The Super Eagles forward missed the UEFA Champions League match against Brest in midweek due to the accident he had last weekend and marked his return to action with a goal.
In the 30th minute, a clever pass from Florian Wirtz found Jeremie Frimpong, who crossed for the Nigeria international to put the ball home to help Bayer Leverkusen break a club record.
According to the official website of the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen have now scored in 21 consecutive away games for the first time in the German top flight, which is also the longest current streak in the division.
Marvin Ducksch put Werder Bremen back on level terms in the 74th minute, heading a cross home, but the Black and Reds quickly restored their lead.
Three minutes later, Frimpong pressured German-Nigerian right-back Felix Agu into making a mistake, and he ended up putting the ball past Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
Romano Schmid restored parity for Bremen once again for the second time in the clash, which was enough for the four-time German champions to earn their first point at home since August 31.
Boniface was replaced in the 70th minute by Patrik Schick and has now netted six goals in eight Bundesliga games this term, just one less than the tally he recorded at this stage last term.
