'Boniface had chances' - Frimpong admits Bayer Leverkusen were not clinical in goalless draw against Stuttgart
Published: November 02, 2024Versatile Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong has admitted that Bayer Leverkusen can only blame themselves after they were held to a goalless draw in a Bundesliga clash against VfB Stuttgart at BayArena on Friday night.
The defending Bundesliga champions had their best game of the season in the German top flight but their dominance counted for nothing as they could only get a point despite their attempts.
Bayer Leverkusen top scorer Victor Boniface was presented with more than one opportunity to break the deadlock but the reliable striker fluffed his lines.
In the 33rd minute, Boniface broke away and fed Frimpong, who finished with a confident first touch, but the goal was disallowed as the Nigeria international had strayed offside and allowed the ball to go out before crossing it into the box.
A minute before halftime, Frimpong found an unmarked Boniface but the Nigerian failed to connect cleanly with his shot.
VfB Stuttgart had another close call when Boniface struck the right-hand post with an effort from distance in the 53rd minute, before Frimpong missed with a close-range header from inside the six-yard box in the 66th minute.
In the 74th minute, goalkeeper Alexander Nübel came to Stuttgart's rescue with a superb save to deny Boniface from opening the scoring.
Speaking to Bayer Leverkusen media post-match, Frimpong said: "The fans were amazing, they had our back all game. Obviously I am disappointed we couldn't win it for them but I feel that we played a very good game, but we just didn't finish our chances.
"The finishing, it wasn't just one player. I had chances. Florian Wirtz had chances, Boniface had chances. Everybody had chances, more than one. We all just missed.
"It's just one of those days you just missed chances but a level like this, a team like this, you have to finish your chances."
Boniface has tallied six goals in this season's Bundesliga, bettered only by Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (9) and Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush (9).
