BBC reporter backs Ola Aina's screamer against West Ham to be nominated for PL Goal of the Month
Published: November 04, 2024BBC reporter John Bennett has backed Ola Aina's screamer in Nottingham Forest's 3-0 win over West Ham United at the City Ground last Saturday for Premier Goal of the Month nomination.
The Super Eagles fullback grabbed the third goal of the afternoon with a venomous strike from outside the penalty area.
Before firing past Łukasz Fabiański who was in goal for the Hammers, the 28-year-old showed physicality to wade off the challenge of his marker and had to thank a poor clearance which ricocheted off him to curl the ball into the far corner.
He joined his Forest teammate Callum Odson-Odoi, Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke, Chelsea loanee Trevor Chalonah, and Marc-Israel Guéhi among the Cobham Products to have scored in the Premier League over the weekend.
Writing in his column for BBC, Bennett reckoned Aina's strike would be nominated for the Goal of the Month and also praised his handling of Hammers winger Crysencio Summerville.
“Ola Aina was mostly up against Crysencio Summerville, a player not only full of confidence after his goal against Manchester United but also full of tricks and the Nigerian hardly gave the former Leeds winger a kick," Bennett said.
"Brian Laws, a brilliant full-back for Brian Clough's Forest in the late 1980s and early 1990s, was singing Aina's praises in the press box for the way he was closing down Summerville.
"Then at the other end of course he scored a goal of the month contender with a left-foot screamer. What a great all round performance."
Aina has had a great start to the campaign, faring well against Premier League's lethal wingers, and his performance against the Hammers is another proof of his blistering start to the campaign.
He has helped Forest become one of the best defensive teams in the English top flight, with the club's goalkeeper Matz Sels recording the joint-most clean sheets in the division
