'I don't care about this' - Osimhen insists he's not eyeing Super Eagles scoring record held by Yekini
Published: November 16, 2024Victor Osimhen has insisted is not eyeing the Super Eagles goalscoring record held by the late Rashidi Yekini.
Yekini scored 37 goals in 62 games to become Nigeria's highest goalscorer and is regarded as the best striker in the country's history.
The late Olympiakos central forward netted the Super Eagles' first-ever goal at the Fifa World Cup and was the top goalscorer at the Africa Cup of Nations on two occasions, in the 1992 and 1994 editions of the tournament
Osimhen is moving closer to equaling Yekini's record and is the joint-second highest goalscorer in the nation's history at the moment, alongside Segun Odegbami after scoring in the 1-1 draw with Benin in the penultimate 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification fixture played on Thursday at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
The Napoli-owned striker has now netted 23 goals for the three-time African champions, the majority of which have come during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 25-year-old has insisted that he is not forced to be the Super Eagles' all-time top-scorer, stating that Yekini is the country's greatest-ever striker
“No, no. I really don't care about this. I just want to do my job and try to win games, score goals, provide a lot of assits for my team," he said in a video uploaded to X.
"Then if I equal it, I equal it, if I surpass it, I surpass it, but that doesn't take away Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker in the Super Eagles have ever had.
"This record stood for a very, very long time and it still stands, so I think we should give him his flowers and also celebrate him."
Osimhen will have another opportunity to increase his tally for Nigeria during the final fixture in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with Rwanda on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
