Eguavoen links Nwabali's tragedy to Super Eagles struggles in historic loss to Rwanda
Published: November 19, 2024Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, suggested that the news of Nwabali's father's passing may have had an emotional impact on the team following their 2-1 loss to Rwanda in Uyo.
Despite already securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON, Nigeria suffered a defeat on Monday evening after initially taking the lead in the second half through a brilliant solo effort from Samuel Chukwueze.
The AC Milan winger weaved past three Rwanda defenders before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari to put Nigeria ahead after a goalless first half.
However, Rwanda equalized in the 72nd minute with a header from Ange Mutsinzi, who connected with a well-placed cross from Kwizera.
Just three minutes later, Innocent Nshuti scored again for Rwanda, slipping the ball through the legs of Maduka Okoye after being played through on goal.
In his post-match comments, Eguavoen acknowledged that the emotional toll from the news of Nwabali's father's passing might have affected the players, potentially influencing the outcome of the match.
When asked about the effect of the devastating news on the team's performance, Eguavoen acknowledged that such personal losses inevitably impact players. "In a way, I think yes. But I think any player that is invited among the squad is capable of playing," Eguavoen said.
Eguavoen emphasized that every player in the squad is given an opportunity to showcase their abilities and contribute to the team's efforts.
"So, people need to get their chance, they got their chance today but unfortunately, we fought for it but it wasn't to be," he said.
The victory is seen as a significant boost for Rwanda ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria in March 2025.
Nigeria's World Cup qualification hopes are hanging by a thread after a string of poor performances. The Super Eagles have yet to secure a win in the qualifiers, with three draws and a defeat in four games.
As a result, Nigeria currently sits in fifth place with just three points, four points behind group leaders Rwanda. To remain in contention for a spot in the tournament, the Super Eagles must win their remaining fixtures.
Despite the challenges, head coach Austin Eguavoen remained optimistic but realistic about the task ahead.
When asked about the impact of their recent result on the upcoming games, Nigeria's head coach, Austin Eguavoen, responded, "No, it won't. It is a hard lesson we have learned. We have to watch these games again and evaluate and do our research and strategies to face them."
