'Just wants to slow him down' - Brighton icon insists Liverpool forward not at fault for Onuachu's injury

Brighton legend Glenn Murray has expressed his views regarding the circumstances surrounding the injury sustained by Paul Onuachu during Liverpool's victory over Southampton.

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium, with Dominik Szoboszlai opening the scoring for the visitors.

Despite Southampton's resilience, with goals from Adam Armstrong and Mário Fernandes briefly putting them ahead, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah delivered a stunning performance, netting a brace in the final thirty minutes to clinch the win.

Onuachu was making his first start of the season but had to be replaced in the 52nd minute after a challenge from Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

The injury occurred shortly after halftime when Onuachu was charging down the field.

Gakpo attempted to impede his progress, resulting in a trip that appeared soft but ultimately led to Onuachu's premature exit from the match.

His substitution proved pivotal as Liverpool capitalized on the momentum to secure the victory.

Glenn Murray weighed in on the controversial challenge, defending Gakpo's intentions.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Murray stated, "There is nothing untoward about the challenge from Cody Gakpo on Paul Onuachu, he just wants to slow him down, stop the breakaway.

"But the big man made that substitution symbol and he looks like he will come off."

Onuachu has struggled for form, having gone without a goal in seven appearances across all competitions for the Saints this season.

With this victory, Liverpool solidified its position at the top of the Premier League table, especially following Manchester City's shocking 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Southampton’s woes deepened, rooted to the league's last spot and grappling with the daunting prospect of dropping into the Championship.
