UEL: Osimhen scores strange goal, livid to see winner disallowed as Galatasaray held by AZ Alkmaar
Published: November 28, 2024Victor Osimhen scored and got another chalked off during Galatasaray's 1-1 draw with AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League matchday five fixture played at the AFAS Stadion on Thursday night.
Two minutes into the game, Sven Mijnans gave AZ Alkmaar the lead, burying the ball home after Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had punched the ball towards his path.
Two minutes before half-time, Osimhen grabbed the equalizer strangely, as his header was knocked off by a defender, but the ball went past the goal line after a good delivery from Dries Mertens.
The goal was initially subjected to a VAR check before it was allowed to stand, sending the away fans into wild jubilation.
Osimhen was livid to see his winner disallowed in the third minute of second half stoppage-time, when he put the ball into the net, but was this time prevented by the VAR, who adjudged him to have been in an offside position.
The Nigerian striker has now netted in back-to-back games in the Europa League this term, having failed to score in his first two.
He has now taken his tally to nine goals in 11 games for Galatasaray, registering more goals than any player for the Turkish giants in the process.
The result means Okan Buruk’s side have amassed 11 points from five games in the competition and are one of the few sides yet to record a loss.
