'They are rivals now' - Fulham midfielder Iwobi eyes three points against old club Arsenal
Published: December 08, 2024
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is targeting three points in the ongoing Premier League clash against Arsenal at Craven Cottage.
The Nigeria international was on the books of Arsenal for fifteen years, rising through the youth ranks to make his first team debut in a Carabao Cup clash against Sheffield Wednesday in October 2015.
Iwobi played 149 games for the Gunners before joining Everton in 2019, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield and reaching the finals of the League Cup and Europa League.
The Hale End Academy graduate, who is facing Arsenal for the eighth time since departing the Emirates Stadium, is one of three former Gunners in the starting lineup, and is playing in a more advanced role on the flank.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kickoff, Iwobi said: "Of course that feeling is always going to be there, it was my home, once upon a time I grew up in the academy but they are rivals now. Today we are trying to get the three points, regardless."
Iwobi scored a couple of goals in Fulham's win against Brighton & Hove Albion, boosting his confidence significantly.
Marco Silva's team picked up a point at Tottenham Hotspur and were narrowly beaten in away matches against Manchester United and Manchester City.
"We have that confidence in the team we are able to compete with anyone in the league and getting the results like we did against Tottenham and Brighton shows we are ready for anyone especially at Craven Cottage," Iwobi remarked.
With Fulham starting the weekend sixth on the table, Iwobi has admitted that the Cottagers are targeting European football at any level.
"Of course, we are ambitious, we want to achieve that step by step. Here's another opportunity to try and climb up the table."
