Leicester's Super Eagles-eligible central defender regrets not making cap-tying appearance for Italy
Published: December 09, 2024
Leicester City central defender Caleb Okoli has expressed his regret over not making a cap-tying appearance for Italy despite receiving multiple call-ups for the Azzurri’s UEFA Nations League matches in 2024.
Okoli, who made a permanent move to Leicester from Atalanta last summer, has been a regular performer for the Foxes this season, earning him consistent invitation into the national team.
His form has caught the attention of Italy’s national coach, Luciano Spalletti, who has called him up for the Nations League matches in September, October, and November.
However, despite these invitations, the 23-year-old has yet to make his debut for Italy, meaning he remains eligible to represent Nigeria, his country of descent.
In an interview with cronachedispogliatoio.it, Okoli shared his disappointment over not being able to make his debut during these call-ups.
"I have experienced some beautiful gatherings and the only regret I have is that I was not able to debut," he said.
"However, I believe that being able to be part of this journey is also important and I am sure that in the future I will be able to debut."
Okoli also reflected on the mental aspect of his journey with the national team, which he believes has contributed to his growth as a player. He recalled his early conversations with Spalletti, who had previously spoken to him during his time at Frosinone, offering valuable technical advice and insight into the responsibilities of being a footballer.
"The coach had already come to talk to me when I was in Frosinone, last year,” Okoli noted.
"He explained some things to me about being a footballer and made me understand the responsibilities we have. He also gave me technical advice. It was truly a pleasure to be able to have that chat."
Although Okoli has represented Italy at U19, U20, and U21 levels, his eligibility for Nigeria through his parents remains intact.
His decision regarding which national team to represent in the future continues to be a topic of speculation, but for now, he remains focused on his club performances and hopes for a future debut on the international stage.
