Andre Onana rolls out red carpet for Nigerian GK Yakubu in Man Utd's UEL showdown against Viktoria Plzen
Published: December 13, 2024
Nigerian goalkeeper Matthew Yakubu was a distinguished guest of Cameroon international André Onana during the Europa League meeting Manchester United and FC Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, December 12.
Onana invited Yakubu to watch him live at the Doosan Aréna, where he likely picked up one or two new tricks from the experienced Manchester United goalkeeper.
Yakubu is currently on the books of Slovak 2.liga side Redfox FC Stará Ľubovňa, where he has kept five clean sheets in sixteen appearances so far this season.
The 25-year-old is not an unknown quantity in his homeland, having been invited to the Super Eagles squad for friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia in October 2020, though he was not utilized by former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.
Onana made four saves during the game against Viktoria Plzen, including two from inside the box.
However, it was his mistake that led to ex-Watford man Matej Vydra opening the scoring for the six-time Czech First League champions.
Two minutes into the second half, Pavel Šulc intercepted an Onana pass just inside the Red Devils' box and set up Vydra, who finished emphatically.
United came from behind to secure their first away win in European competition since March 2023, thanks to a brace from substitute Rasmus Højlund.
After the game, Yakubu took to Instagram to thank Onana for the invitation, adding that it was a pleasure to meet him.
