Jones carded for tackle on Iwobi as Liverpool boss Arne Slot hit with touchline ban for protesting
Published: December 14, 2024
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a one-match touchline ban after expressing his frustration over a contentious tackle by midfielder Curtis Jones on Fulham's Alex Iwobi.
The incident occurred during the second half of Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.
The game kicked off with Fulham taking an early lead in the 11th minute.
Full-back Antonee Robinson made a crucial run to the byline, delivering a cross that was met acrobatically by Andreas Pereira, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.
Liverpool's woes compounded when Andy Robertson was sent off just six minutes later, receiving a red card for a foul on Wilson, leaving the Reds with 10 men early in the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Liverpool fought back, equalizing in the 47th minute through a well-placed header from Cody Gakpo, who connected with a sublime cross from Mohamed Salah.
In the 57th minute of the match, Curtis Jones let his emotions get the better of him and committed a late tackle on former Everton player Alex Iwobi.
Referee Tony Harrington responded by issuing a yellow card to Jones for the foul. However, Slot expressed his frustration at the referee's ruling.
Slot's animated reaction to the decision led to his own booking, resulting in the touchline ban.
Slot had already picked up yellow cards in earlier fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal this season, and will serve a one-game ban in Liverpool's next Premier League match at Tottenham Hotspur.
The match continued to unfold with drama, as Fulham regained the lead in the 76th minute through substitute Rodrigo Muniz, who skillfully backheeled the ball over Alisson.
Liverpool responded late in the game, with Darwin Nunez setting up Diogo Jota for a dynamic finish into the top corner, leveling the score once again.
Alex Iwobi has been a standout player for Fulham this season, notching five goals and delivering three assists across sixteen league matches.
