African POTY: Former Super Eagles number 9 lands in Morocco to support Lookman

Former Super Eagles number 9, Obafemi Martins has arrived in Marrakech, Morocco, to lend his support to fellow Nigerian star Ademola Lookman at the prestigious 2024 Africa Player of the Year awards ceremony.

Known for his iconic acrobatic goal celebrations, Martins is among the esteemed African legends invited to this high-profile event.

Joining Martins are several other notable figures from African football, including Victor Wanyama, Mohamed Zidan, Portia Modise, the first African woman to score 100 international goals, and Seydou Keita from Mali.

The presence of these legends adds a rich sense of history and camaraderie to the celebration.

Ademola Lookman is a strong contender for the coveted award due to his outstanding performances with Atalanta and the Nigerian national team.

The 27-year-old forward is vying for the award alongside renowned players such as Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi, and Ronwen Williams.

Lookman's remarkable form last season saw him score a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final, leading Atalanta to a resounding 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen and clinching the club's first-ever European title.

His contributions were also vital during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he netted three goals, helping Nigeria secure a silver medal after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the final.

Continuing his impressive trajectory this season, Lookman has already scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 19 matches across all competitions, propelling Atalanta to the top of the Serie A table and also in contention for the knockout phase of the new UEFA Champions League format.

Should Lookman be crowned the 2024 African Player of the Year, he will succeed compatriot Victor Osimhen, who took home the award last year following a stellar season with Napoli, where they captured the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years.
