Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho beats Onuachu to Fifa Puskas Award for 2024
Published: December 17, 2024
Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho's stunning overhead kick scored against Everton has been awarded the Pultas award, successfully surpassing Paul Onuachu's impressive strike against Konyaspor in the voting.
Onuachu and Garnacho were in the running alongside a total of nine other nominees, which featured notable players such as Federico Dimarco, Jaden Philogene, and Mohammed Kudus.
The list of nominees also included Hassan Al Haydos, Terry Antonis, Yassine Benzia, Walter Bou, Michaell Chirinos, and Denis Omedi.
The Nigerian striker was nominated for the award after his incredible match-winning goal for Trabzonspor against Konyaspor.
Onuachu's moment of brilliance arrived in the 85th minute when Enis Destan sent a cross in from the left flank.
With a remarkable display of athleticism, the towering striker expertly positioned his body and executed a stunning flying backheel to score.
However, Garnacho's stunning strike for United in their Premier League clash at Goodison Park in November 2023 was honored at the 2024 FIFA Best Player of the Year awards, held in Doha, Qatar.
Garnacho's goal came in spectacular fashion, as he launched himself into the air to connect with a lofted cross from Diogo Dalot.
Despite the ball being slightly behind him, the young forward executed a perfect overhead kick, sending the ball rocketing past Everton's goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Despite the recognition, Onuachu has faced challenges since returning to Southampton after his loan spell.
Struggling for form in the Premier League, he has yet to score or provide an assist in six appearances this season.
Hopefully, the nomination will serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring him to regain his scoring touch and contribute significantly to Southampton's fight against relegation.
