Nigeria, Ghana or Italy? Former Super Eagles star Obafemi Martins weighs in on son's international future
Published: December 20, 2024
Former Super Eagles star Obafemi Martins has opened up about his son's international future, saying he prefers the Monza forward to play for Nigeria instead of Italy's La Nazionale or Ghana's Black Stars.
Born in Milan nineteen years ago, Kevin Martins is eligible to represent the Super Eagles and Black Stars through his father and mother respectively as well as his country of birth, Italy.
The Italian Football Federation have made the first move to beat their rivals to the services of Martins, having capped him at U15 level.
However, the talented forward is not provisionally cap-tied to the Italians as the games he played in were friendly matches.
Kevin comes from a footballing family—his maternal uncle is former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, and his paternal uncle, Oladipupo Martins, was also a footballer.
With his pace and dribbling ability, Kevin mirrors his father not just in appearance but also in his playing style.
Kevin carries a heavy surname on his shoulders as his dad is a bona fide Super Eagles legend, tallying 18 goals in 42 appearances for the national team.
When asked whether his son Kevin will represent the Super Eagles, Obafemi Martins told French-based Nigerian journalist Babatunde Ojora in Marrakesh earlier this week: "Hopefully yes. I mean he's half-Nigerian so we will see."
Kevin Martins came off the bench to score on his debut for Italy's youth national team in a 4-1 victory over Portugal in November 2019.
