Denied a classic goal: Ex-Man City star says Bassey was unlucky not to score in Fulham's win v Chelsea
Published: December 26, 2024Former Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips says Fulham central defender Calvin Bassey was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet during the first half of the London derby against Chelsea on Boxing Day.
The Cottagers came from behind to beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge for the first time in the Premier League era.
Chelsea opened the scoring through Cole Palmer who beat two Fulham defenders and placed the ball out of goalkeeper Bernd Leno's reach in the 16th minute.
Twenty six minutes into the first half, Bassey was denied a classic goal by Chelsea glovesman Robert Sánchez.
The Nigeria international, of all people, saw his low drive saved by the Spaniard after dribbling from inside his own half.
Bassey did everything right to put Fulham back on level terms but the goalkeeper made a great save.
"Amazing run. Sometimes you get into these positions and the space just keeps coming," Shaun Wright-Phillips said on Premier League Productions post-match.
"The quality of what he does here where he takes it between them and the quality to hit the target, as well, I think he was really unlucky."
Fulham are now unbeaten in six games on the bounce, thanks to late goals from super subs Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz.
Bassey has started all the matches played by Fulham in this season's Premier League with the exception of the trip to Liverpool, where he was left out of the squad due to a suspension.
The former Ajax Amsterdam defender has one goal to his name since his return to the United Kingdom and it came against Manchester United at Old Trafford back in February.
