'It's never a good sign' - Rangers coach admits he doesn't know how serious Balogun's injury is
Published: December 27, 2024
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has revealed he is uncertain about the severity of Leon Balogun’s injury, which he sustained during the team’s 2-1 defeat to St Mirren.
The Nigerian defender was forced off just 19 minutes into the match at the Paisley 2021 Stadium, replaced by Robin Pröpper.
Balogun's early departure adds to Rangers' growing injury concerns, particularly with absence of John Souttar, who has already been sidelined for several weeks.
The 36-year-old's fitness is now in doubt for the upcoming clash against Motherwell, as well as next week's crucial Old Firm derby against Celtic.
When asked about Balogun's injury, Clement admitted he did not have any details on the extent of the problem, stating that he had focused on other matters during the team talk at half-time.
"I don't know yet, to be honest. I didn't have time to speak about that," Clement was quoted as saying by The Herald when asked about the nature of the defender's injury.
"I had other things to speak about in half-time and after the game also."
The Rangers boss further explained that he hadn't sought immediate clarification on the injury, as he knew the club’s medical staff would conduct a thorough assessment.
"So, I didn't ask that one because I know the doctor will say he needs to make an assessment tomorrow. So, we will focus on that tomorrow," he added.
Clement acknowledged the significance of Balogun’s injury and the impact on the team.
"Now we have to focus on changing this game, what the team did in the second half. But then we need to finish it off also.
"Like I said before the game, you make a rotation to avoid these things. We cannot make more rotations than we did the last couple of weeks.
"But I don't know what the situation will be with Leon. But it's never a good sign if a player comes off in the first half. Also, as a team, it's never good.
"You need to make a change because maybe we missed that change in the second half to make the difference and to score the second goal and to win this game."
Balogun's potential absence is a significant blow to Rangers, given his solid performances this season.
The experienced defender has played in 17 games across all competitions while maintaining a disciplined record with just two yellow cards.
Rangers will be hoping for a swift recovery for Balogun as they prepare for their next set of crucial fixtures.
