'Has to be a goal' - Ex-Sunderland star calls out Rangers striker Dessers for missed chance v Motherwell
Published: December 29, 2024Former Sunderland midfielder Derek Ferguson has criticized Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers for squandering a golden opportunity during Rangers' 2-2 draw against Motherwell on Sunday evening at Fir Park.
Dessers, who was given a rare starting role by manager Philippe Clement, failed to capitalize on a key chance in the first half while the scoreline remained goalless.
The match saw Motherwell take a commanding lead through goals from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Tawanda Maswanhise.
In response to the deficit, Clement made a double substitution at the start of the second half, one of which saw Dessers replaced by Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane.
The substitution proved pivotal as Igamane scored two goals, helping Rangers fight back to level the game at 2-2.
However, prior to being taken off, Dessers had a clear opportunity to score.
A precise cross from Ridvan Yilmaz found Dessers at the back post, but the striker failed to make proper contact, missing what was a gilt-edged chance to equalize for Rangers at that point in the game.
Reacting to the incident, Ferguson was quick to criticize Dessers' finishing on BBC Sportsound, saying, "It has to be a goal, simple as. Ridvan Yilmaz's cross is bang on the money, and Cyriel Dessers should be scoring."
The miss further highlighted Dessers' struggles this season, as he has found it difficult to replicate the form he showed last year.
The Nigerian forward has scored six goals and provided two assists in seventeen league appearances so far in the current campaign.
Dessers' failure to make the most of his opportunity against Motherwell, coupled with his recent form, has led to increased speculation regarding his future at Rangers, especially as the winter transfer window approaches.
