Man Utd's search for a left-back: Red Devils scout in attendance as Onyemaechi goes 90 v Porto
Published: December 30, 2024
A representative of Manchester United was in attendance at the Estádio do Dragão on Saturday as Porto thrashed Boavista 4-0 in the Liga Portugal.
According to Portuguese sports daily O Jogo, via Sport Witness, the Red Devils had a scout at the Estádio do Dragão to watch the clash between Porto and Boavista.
There is no information in the report about the specific target Manchester United were watching.
However, new Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has asked the Board to sign a new left-back in the January transfer window or at the end of the season, suggesting that Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia do not suit his preferred playing style.
Boavista's Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi and Porto's Nigeria-eligible striker Samuel Aghehowa were the two players of Nigerian descent on parade at Estádio do Dragão, with both playing the full ninety minutes.
Amorim prefers to set up his team with three central defenders and two wingbacks, and Onyemaechi suits his system, as he is comfortable playing as a wingback, both at Boavista and for the Super Eagles.
This season, Onyemaechi has proven his versatility by featuring in several roles, including central defender, wingback, left-back and left winger.
Although Onyemaechi is contracted to Boavista until June 2026, his future remains the subject of intense speculation, with clubs from the United States, Turkey, Italy, Brazil and Mexico keeping a close watch on him.
