'We all knew he was a fantastic player' - Chelsea icon Mikel lavishes praise on ex-teammate Ola Aina
Published: January 01, 2025John Obi Mikel has expressed his admiration for compatriot Ola Aina’s impressive performances for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this season.
Nottingham Forest has been the surprise package of the season, currently sitting in second place.
They are ahead of third-placed Arsenal, albeit having played one more game, and hold a two-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea.
Aina has been one of the standout players for the former European champions, consistently delivering solid performances.
He is among the few players to have featured in every single game for Forest in the league this season.
The Super Eagles defender has excelled against some of the division’s best wingers, including Liverpool’s Luis Díaz and Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho.
In addition to his stellar defensive displays, Aina has contributed offensively, scoring twice in the league so far, having matched his career-best tally in the Premier League after just 19 games.
The Cobham Academy graduate has earned widespread recognition for his performances, even being included in Jamie Carragher's 'Team of the Season' for the first half of the campaign.
Mikel, who played alongside the versatile full-back during their time at Chelsea, said he is not surprised by Aina’s stellar form.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel said: "He has had a good season so far. One thing he has added to his game this season is that he’s defending well. He is putting in a lot of crosses now and, of course, chipping in a couple of goals as well, which is absolutely fantastic to see.
"Listen, we all knew he was a fantastic player at the club. He has gone to Forest and has been playing well since returning to the Premier League from Italy."
Aina has attracted interest from Manchester City, further highlighting his growing reputation in English football.
Talks are underway between the 28-year-old and Nottingham Forest for a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
