'Two poor goals' - Ipswich manager reacts to Onuachu and Aribo's goal in Southampton's victory
Published: February 02, 2025
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has expressed his disappointment over the goals conceded in his side's 2-1 defeat to Southampton at Portman Road on Saturday evening.
The two goals conceded by the Tractor Boys were scored by Nigerian players Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu.
Joe Aribo opened the scoring in the 21st minute, firing a shot straight at Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, who failed to make a routine save.
Meanwhile, Paul Onuachu capitalized on a rebound after Muric spilled a low strike from Kamaldeen Sulemana, securing the winner for Southampton despite an earlier equalizer from Liam Delap.
The victory provided a crucial boost for Southampton as they continue their fight to avoid relegation.
The Saints sit at the bottom of the Premier League table with nine points, trailing 19th-placed Ipswich Town by seven points.
Reacting to the goals in his post-match press conference, McKenna criticized his team's defensive lapses, describing the goals as avoidable.
"Yeah they were, the first goal is a goal kick and it's probably the first time that they entered our box and it should be saved as well. Two poor goals," McKenna stated, according to the BBC.
Aribo and Onuachu have been key players for Southampton in their relegation battle under manager Ivan Jurić.
Since Jurić's arrival, Onuachu has netted two goals despite struggling for form following his move from Genk.
Meanwhile, Aribo has contributed three goals in 23 league appearances as he looks to rejuvenate his career.
With both players finding form, Southampton will aim to strengthen their survival bid.
