16 aerial duels won: Onuachu showcases his aerial prowess in Southampton's win v Ipswich
Published: February 02, 2025
Paul Onuachu proved why he can be counted to win aerial battles during Southampton's 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town in a Premier League encounter at Portman Road on Saturday, February 1, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Nigeria national teamer showcased his aerial dominance, winning an astonishing game-high sixteen aerial duels of the twenty-four he attempted.
To put that into perspective, the entire Ipswich Town team won seventeen aerial duels over the course of ninety minutes, one less that the lanky Southampton striker.
Onuachu's aerial prowess makes him a key asset, especially in set-piece situations and attacking crosses.
His ability to win aerial duels might prove instrumental in the Saints' battle to stay in the Premier League.
Southampton find themselves at the bottom of the table with fourteen matches remaining in the 2024-2025 season, including fixtures against five of the so-called traditional top six teams Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal.
The Saints defeated fellow strugglers Ipswich Town and are ten points from safety despite the win.
After a solid opening twenty minutes, Southampton had the lead in the 21st minute courtesy of Joe Aribo, whose shot went into the ground and deflected past Tractor Boys goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
With three minutes left on the clock, Onuachu netted the game-winning goal, tapping in the rebound with his left foot after Kamaldeen's effort was saved by Muric.
