Arsenal in talks with history-making midfielder of Nigerian descent over new contract
Published: February 03, 2025Arsenal are in talks with England U19 international attacking midfielder of Nigerian descent Ethan Nwaneri over a new contract.
When Nwaneri made his Premier League debut against Brentford on September 18, 2022, he entered into the history books, becoming the youngest player to feature in the English top-flight aged 15 years and 181 days.
Since then, the Hale End Academy graduate has totaled 24 appearances for the first team, scoring seven goals, including his brilliant strike against Manchester City in a Premier League encounter on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.
Fans have great expectations for Nwaneri’s progress, viewing him as a promising talent for Arsenal and either England or Nigeria.
According to transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, new contracts for Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly will be part of the process at Arsenal after the end of the transfer window, with talks already underway.
Before the start of the 2023–2024 season, Nwaneri turned down offers from Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, choosing instead to sign a scholarship deal with Arsenal, which was upgraded to a professional contract when he turned 17 last March.
The Gunners are offering Nwaneri a new deal that befits his status as a first team player, having broken into the senior side in the ongoing season.
He has been called up for 33 first team games this term, though he missed two games in the Premier League and one FA Cup match due to a muscle injury.
