Okoye set to miss WCQ: Top 3 goalkeepers Eric Chelle should consider as replacement for Udinese star

The Nigerian national football team is facing a significant setback as Maduka Okoye is set to miss the upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to his involvement in a betting scandal.

The Udinese goalkeeper is under investigation by Italian authorities for suspected betting anomalies, which could see him banned for up to four years if found guilty.

In addition, the former Bayer Leverkusen youth teamer has not been registered by Udinese for the second half of the 2024-2025 campaign, meaning his season is over.

As the Super Eagles prepare for their critical World Cup qualifying matches, head coach Eric Chelle will need to select a replacement for Okoye.

Here are the top three goalkeepers Chelle should consider as potential candidates to be called up in Okoye’s absence:

1. Adebayo Adeleye

Adebayo Adeleye, who currently plays for Enosis Neon Paralimniou in the Cypriot First Division, is one of the leading candidates to replace Okoye.

The 24-year-old has shown consistent form, recording six clean sheets in his recent appearances.

Standing at 1.86 meters, Adeleye’s physical presence, agility, and shot-stopping abilities have made him a key player for his club.

Having made a name for himself in Cyprus, he could prove to be a reliable option for the Super Eagles during the qualifiers.

With experience playing at the highest level in the Cypriot league, Adeleye is ready for the challenge of playing at the international stage.

2. Arthur Okonkwo

Arthur Okonkwo, a 23-year-old goalkeeper currently playing for Wrexham AFC in English League One, is another strong contender.

Okonkwo, who began his career in Arsenal’s youth system, has gained valuable experience playing in domestic leagues.

His impressive 1.98-meter frame allows him to command his area, and he boasts solid reflexes and a quick reaction time.

Okonkwo’s trophy cabinet includes an Austrian Cup win, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure.

The Hale End Academy graduate is an excellent candidate to step into the national team.

3. Owen Goodman

The 21-year-old Owen Goodman, currently with AFC Wimbledon in England’s League Two on loan from Crystal Palace, is another option for the Super Eagles.

Standing at 1.93 meters, Goodman has the physicality to handle aerial duels and is a reliable shot-stopper.

He has earned 14 clean sheets this season, demonstrating consistency and maturity for his age.

Goodman's performances for AFC Wimbledon have shown that he is a goalkeeper capable of withstanding the pressures of senior football.

His potential, coupled with his promising performances in England, could make him a viable option for Nigeria during the World Cup qualifiers.
