FA Cup: Man Utd becomes Bassey's favourite opponent as Fulham CB finds the net at Old Trafford
Published: March 02, 2025
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey marked his FA Cup debut with a goal as Fulham advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Manchester United 4-3 on penalties at Old Trafford.
Manchester United can now be regarded as Calvin Bassey's favourite opponent, having netted two goals against them – his highest tally against any team since turning professional.
The match ended 1-1 after regular time, with Bassey playing a crucial role for Fulham defensively and offensively.
Bassey, who returned to the starting lineup after being rested in Fulham's win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, gave the Cottagers the lead just before halftime.
The former Leicester City player headed home from close range after Rodrigo Muniz flicked on a corner kick delivered by Andreas Pereira, a former Manchester United midfielder.
The goal was Bassey's second of the season across all competitions and came in his first-ever FA Cup appearance.
However, Manchester United responded in the second half when Bruno Fernandes equalized with about 20 minutes remaining, finishing a low cross from Diogo Dalot.
Despite United's relentless push for a winner, Bassey remained solid in defense, keeping the opposition attackers at bay and ensuring Fulham forced the game into a penalty shootout, where they emerged victorious.
With this performance, Bassey will take confidence into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
He is expected to be part of the squad and will aim to deliver another strong defensive display to help Nigeria secure crucial victories.
