'Let him go' – Former Super Eagles centre-back reacts to Ola Aina's Manchester City links

Former Super Eagles central defender Efe Sodje has urged Ola Aina to make the switch to Manchester City if the Premier League champions come calling, insisting that the move would make him a first-choice player at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to Brila Media about speculation linking the Nottingham Forest full-back to Manchester City, Sodje backed Aina to thrive under Pep Guardiola’s system.

"What City are doing now, they’re rebuilding. If they come for him, he’ll be first choice. Let him go,” Sodje said.

Aina, 28, has been a key figure for Nottingham Forest this season, playing a vital role in their push for a UEFA Champions League spot.

The versatile defender, who can operate on both flanks, has impressed with his defensive solidity, technical ability, and attacking contributions.

His performances have reportedly caught the attention of Guardiola, who is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

Manchester City are believed to be considering long-term options for their full-back positions.

Aina’s versatility and experience in the Premier League make him a potential candidate to reinforce the defensive unit of the reigning champions.

Forest signed Aina on a free transfer from Torino in the summer of 2023, and he has since established himself as one of their most reliable defenders.

His current contract runs until the end of the season, meaning City could potentially sign him without a transfer fee if he does not renew his deal with Forest.

In addition to his club performances, Aina has remained an important part of the Nigerian national team.

He was recently named in the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Nigeria will face Rwanda in Kigali before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo as they look to revive their qualification hopes.

A move to Manchester City would be a major step forward in Aina’s career, offering him the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League and compete for top honors.

With Sodje’s backing, the decision may ultimately come down to whether Aina believes he will get regular playing time under Guardiola.

For now, the Super Eagles star remains focused on helping Forest secure a Champions League spot and contributing to Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign.

However, with City reportedly monitoring his situation, the summer transfer window could present a big decision for the defender.
