2026 World Cup qualifier: Five observations from Super Eagles' 2-0 victory against Rwanda

The Super Eagles have revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a victory against Rwanda at the Amahoro stadium on Friday evening.

Despite the presence of thousands of Rwanda - who came to support the Wraps in Kigali, the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory to close the gap on the Wasps.

Victor Osimhen hit the back of the net in the eleventh minute, finishing a cross from Ademola Lookman. The strike was a testament to Nigeria's dominant performance in the opening minutes.

The Galatasaray striker doubled the lead with a few minutes to the end of the first half, beating Fiacre Ntwari with - a smart loop after a nice run from midfield.

The victory increased Nigeria's point in Group C to six points from five games, leaving Nigeria just one point behind Rwanda, and two points behind Benin.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the game.

Eric Chelle Outmaneuvers Adel Amrouche in Tactical Showdown

Eric Chelle masterminded a dominant tactical display as his Nigeria side overpowered Rwanda.

The Malian coach deployed an aggressive high press, stifling the Amavubi's buildup play and forcing them into long balls, which played into Nigeria's hands.

From the opening minutes, the Super Eagles' relentless pressing unsettled Rwanda, limiting their attacking rhythm and ensuring Nigeria controlled possession.

Throughout the game, Nigeria's dominance forced Rwanda into hurried clearances and counter-attacks, which the Super Eagles' defense comfortably neutralized.

Osimhen Punishes Rwanda, Responds to Bizimana's Pre-Match Talk

Victor Osimhen delivered a statement performance, scoring twice in the first half to secure Nigeria's victory.

His brace was a direct response to Djihad Bizimana's pre-match comments, where the Rwandan midfielder dismissed the threat posed by Nigeria's attackers, referencing their past success against them in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

However, Osimhen had the final say, tormenting the Rwandan defense and ensuring Bizimana endured a frustrating night, culminating in the latter receiving a yellow card early in the second half.

Rwanda Falters Despite Home Support

A packed Amahoro Stadium in Kigali provided vocal backing for the Amavubi, but Rwanda failed to rise to the occasion.

Their attack lacked cutting edge, and they failed to register a serious threat on Stanley Nwabali's goal.

The Super Eagles' control of the match left the hosts chasing shadows, unable to impose themselves despite the home advantage.

Tolu Arokodare Makes Super Eagles Debut

Tolu Arokodare earned his first Super Eagles cap, coming on in the 77th minute to replace the influential Osimhen.

The 24-year-old forward was called up following an impressive season with Genk, where he notched 19 goals and provided six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

His introduction marked a significant milestone in his international career.

Rwanda's Defensive Struggles

Defensively, Rwanda was overrun, failing to cope with Nigeria's attacking movement and intensity.

Their inability to handle Nigeria's high press further exposed their backline, making it a long and frustrating night for Adel Amrouche's side.
