'We used 2 or 3 systems' - Chelle highlights Super Eagles tactics, what impressed him about Rwanda

Eric Chelle praised his players after securing his first win in charge of the Super Eagles but challenged them to raise their game in the next fixture against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, March 25.

After three draws in their opening four matches, the Super Eagles finally secured their first win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, thanks to a first half brace from Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chelle highlighted the tactical flexibility his team displayed during the match.

Starting in what looked like a 4-2-3-1 setup, Nigeria had four defenders at the back, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi in the heart of midfield, while Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen occupied the attacking roles.

Tactical changes became apparent in the second half, first when central midfielder Raphael Onyedika took the place of winger Chukwueze, and later when Alhassan Yusuf was introduced following Bright Osayi-Samuel’s injury.

"We have a team with strengths and weaknesses, my job is to think about the game project," Eric Chelle told reporters.

"My job is to tell my players it's possible to play like that so this is a game we played two or three systems."

Chelle praised his squad’s effort and adaptability but made it clear that there is still work to be done.

"This is why I said I am proud of my players. Congratulations to them," he continued.

"We need to improve, I know that. This was the first game, so I'm happy for the win, but we need to go back to work."

Looking ahead to the Super Eagles next match, Chelle called for full focus as the three-time African champions prepare for their clash with Zimbabwe.

"There is a second game on March 25th, so we need to be ready for this game," he said.

"I don't want to talk about the weaknesses of a great team like Rwanda. My job is to analyze my players. The coach of Rwanda, that’s his job."

Chelle also took time to compliment Rwanda’s performance, acknowledging the talent in their squad.

“I can say that you have some great players — fast players with good stamina. They want to play football. I like your team, but I want to be focused on my team.”

After five games in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, South Africa top the table with ten points, with Benin close behind on eight — two ahead of Nigeria, who sit fourth.
