Borussia Dortmund want to keep Chelsea midfielder on Chelle's radar, but not on permanent deal
Published: April 11, 2025
Chelsea-owned midfielder Carney Chuwkemeka joined Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window in search of adequate game time.
The German Bundesliga giants have a purchase option but have not activated it as they have a different plan.
Born in Austria, Chukwuemeka is one of the dual-national players on the radar of Nigeria manager Eric Chelle ahead of next month's Unity Cup.
However, his participation in the London tournament appears unlikely as he is provisionally cap-tied tied to England and hasn't initiated the paperwork to represent Nigeria.
Borussia Dortmund would have to pay around €30 million to sign tri-national player Chuwkuemeka on a permanent deal.
According to Dortmund based daily newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten, paying that sum is out of the question for several reasons.
Borussia Dortmund would very much like to have Chukwuemeka in the squad next season, but they are seeking another loan deal for the Aston Villa academy graduate, provided they qualify for next season's European competition.
After twenty-eight matches in the German top-flight, Dortmund sit eighth in the standings with 41 points,
Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 and has a contract with the Londoners until June 30, 2028.
The 21-year-old has played in eight games for Borussia Dortmund, including two starts, and scored his first goal for the club last weekend in a 4-1 road win versus SC Freiburg.
