Bayer Leverkusen's Nigeria forward Nathan Tella suffers another injury ahead of Unity Cup
Published: April 12, 2025
Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella has suffered another injury setback, raising concerns for both club and country after he was forced off during Bayer Leverkusen’s goalless draw against Union Berlin at the BayArena on Saturday afternoon.
The 25-year-old picked up a knock in the 35th minute following a collision with Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow while chasing a high ball into the box.
Although both players initially continued, Tella appeared to aggravate the injury just minutes later after an awkward landing during a Leverkusen attacking move.
Despite completing the first half, Tella did not return for the second half and was replaced by Moroccan winger Amine Adli.
According to German outlet 90min.de, Tella remained in the dressing room after halftime due to the injury, with the club opting not to take any risks.
The development is a major concern for Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as the Bundesliga leaders continue their title race with Bayern Munich.
Tella has played an important role in Leverkusen’s domestic campaign, and a long-term absence would be a setback in their push for silverware.
The Arsenal Hale End Academy graduate was included in the provisional squad for Nigeria's recent World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe but missed both games due to fitness concerns.
With the Unity Cup fast approaching and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set to resume later this year, both Leverkusen and Nigeria will be anxiously awaiting updates on the extent of the winger’s injury.
Tella will be hoping the setback is minor as he looks to stay fit and regain form ahead of a crucial summer for club and country.
